This is the first of a series of three photos of activities at a warehouse of the Army Quartermaster's Effects Bureau. The Bureau was in Hoboken, N.J., but also rented warehouse space in New York. [Writing on the crates is "Effects Bureau, 520 [529?] Greenwich St., New York"].[ " The work is increasing to such an extent and the packages are coming so rapidly that Colonel Danforth leased another large warehouse on Greenwich Street New York."] The Effects Bureau managed the personal effects of war dead, returned from the battlefield. Col. Chas. H. Danforth was Chief of the Bureau. American Legion Weekly, July 25, 1919 books.google.com/books?id=IrhCAQAAMAAJ&dq=Effects+Bur... In this photo a worker with a large pot of ink and a brush is apparently writing a shipping address on a crate of effects.
