Staff Sergeant Jack B. Lavender (USAAF) was killed in the same mission as Col. John Howard Payne (July 27, 1913 - January 11, 1943), but not the same aircraft. S.Sgt. Lavender was the radio operator aboard a B-24 (B-24D-5-CO; USAAF Ser. No. 41-23801) commanded by Lt. Louis A. Prchal, that was shot down by Italian fighter aircraft over Naples, Italy, on January 11, 1943. [...] Lowell T. Wasson of Ozark. Born in 1890, he was the only son of James A. and Mary (Jones) Wasson, who were living on a farm near Riverdale at the time of his death. Lowell was a 2nd Lieutenant in Company M of the 120 Infantry and was killed in action at Ypres, Belgium in 1918. A graduate of Drury College, he was 16 days shy of his 28th birthday and he left behind no wife, no children, no grandchildren and no great-grandchildren.

Friendly fire incidents were an unfortunate consequence of war. The 30th Division had recently lost two ment this way. . . . An officer in Company M of the 120th Infantry, 2nd Lt. Lowell T. Wasson, was shot by a private from his unit on 7 August [1918]. Wasson apparently became confused after returning from a patrol near Swan Chateau and entered a listening post unannounced. The private guarding the post was ordered to fire on Wasson hy his superiors, who thought the intruder was a German conducting a trench raid. . . . Brigadier General Tyson concluded that in Wasson's case, the shooting could have been avoided. "Orders will be issued to prevent a recurrence of such deplorable results," Tyson wrote in his report.
