75 Years Ago - 1946 - Col. Osborn Killed in Plane Crash Col. Roy W. Osborn, formerly of Sanborn and the son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. George O. Gilbertson of Valley City, was among 23 persons killed in the crash of an army C-54 transport plane on Tobago Island, 12 miles from Panama City, Panama, Sunday morning, according to an Associated Press dispatch. An army rescue party recovered 19 bodies from the wreckage before darkness halted activities last night. The plane, which carried 17 passengers and six crew members crashed on a mountainside on Taboga Island, off the coast of the Canal Zone, while on a routine flight from Morrison field here to Albrook Field, C.Z. His wife and three small sons, William, 4, Paul, 2, and John, six months, are en route to Valley City from Phoenix, Arizona, and her parents believe that she is unaware of her husband’s death. Col. Osborn has been stationed at Williams Field, Chandler, Arizona, and had been transferred to Panama one week ago. While he was getting located there, his family was coming to Valley City for a visit. During the war in Europe, Col. Osborn commanded a P-38 Lightning Group and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action while leading fighter aircraft on several missions over Germany. His father is Rev. William M. Osborn, former pastor of the Sanborn Congregational church. He now lives at Wyanet, Ill. Besides his parents and his own family he leaves a sister and brother.
