Republic P-47D-28-RE Thunderbolt 'Iron Ass/No Guts-No Glory', 44-19566. 82nd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force. This plane had two different assigned pilots and two different names while serving with the 78th....both of them big brass. L

Republic P-47N-25-RE (F-47N) Thunderbolt 44-89444 on display ca. '50's. This a/c was formerly in the NY ANG's 47th FIS 518th ADG @ Niagara Falls Mun. Airport. This P-47 has survived and is currently on display as "Cheek Baby" at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, Long Island, NY.

I think the person in the center is pilot Larry Nelson. Here is a link to his oral history - digitalcollections.library.gvsu.edu/document/29279 The Commemorative Air Force also has an oral history of his on file that has not been digitized, but does support his identity in this image.
