Richard Haldane, Viscount Haldane, Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, visiting the United States in 1913. New York Times, 31 Aug 1913 uses a cropped version of this photo. The caption identifies the gentleman on the right as Sir Kenneth Muir Mackenzie; the LOC text seems to have misread Bain's "K" as an "H". Accompanying story: "WEST POINT, Aug. 30. -- Viscount Haldane, Great Britain's Lord High Chancellor and former British War Secretary, spent a busy three hours at the Military Academy this afternoon. Accompanied by a distinguished party, the Lord High Chancellor sailed up the Hudson on J. Pierpont Morgan's yacht Corsair, arriving at West Point at 1:30." Wikipedia: J.P. Morgan, Jr. (corrected per Richard Arthur Norton, thanks; yeah he looked too young and unscarred here to be the father.) Viscount Haldane Kenneth Muir Mackenzie
  • Richard Norton said:
A correction, it is J.P. Morgan Jr. His father had already died that year on March 31, 1913: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._P._Morgan,_Jr.

The detail present in these vintage photos is always amazing considering the technology of the time, although it was state of the art then. Viewed large, the background structure looks sharper than the three men, probably because of a slow exposure and a little movement by the subjects.

Yes, and they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Now stay off the furniture!

Thanks to both of you for your research. We'll add "Jr." to the caption and the date the next time we update the record.
