John Saxton Sumner (1876-1971) headed the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice (NYSSV), a New York state censorship body empowered to recommend obscenity cases to the appropriate prosecutors.

"He served as Associate Secretary of the NYSSV for three years, succeeding founder Anthony Comstock as Executive Secretary in 1915, upon the latter's death. Sumner retired in 1950; the organization, by then named the Society to Maintain Public Decency, was disbanded shortly thereafter." [1] [2]

Shanxi or Shaanxi? I see both spellings used within the same record. I did find a Wikipedia reference of "Shanxi – not to be confused with the neighboring province of Shaanxi." Wikipedia then goes on to confuse me stating (under the heading of "Name") "if tone marks are not written, both Shaanxi and the neighbouring province of Shanxi, to the east of Shaanxi, should be spelled 'Shanxi' ". Maybe this is one of those "difference without a distinction" things ;) ... and no matter how it's spelled, the photographs are wonderful!
