Amazing to think that with such cold waters the film didn't retriculate.

Frank Hurley was probably the luckiest photographer who ever lived. On the Endurance expedition, he dove into the Antarctic waters to retrieve his glass-plate negatives from the slowly sinking ship, then survived the months-long trek and wait for rescue. He had to leave behind most of his exposed plates because they were too heavy to carry, so he buried them in the ice and snow. Years later, he returned to Antarctica and retrieved them--and all of his photos survived.

Note the rudimentary guard above the donkey boiler, the beginnings of H&S at work, it would stop hot rivets and metal chips hitting the engineer-not that it stop a 12ton peice of steel crashing onto the person below!

These old pictures are from the time when Britain was entitled to have the word 'Great' before the name, at least as far as shipbuilding went.
