Dawes Point, pre-1924

It describes the fort - "By 1819 Governor Lachlan Macquarie ordered the convict and architect Francis Greenway, to construct a castellated fort at Dawes Point. Largely a stage-front, the fort was to appear threatening to vessels sailing into Sydney Harbour through the Heads" This looks like it could be one of Major General Harry Finn's commissioned photographs of 1901-3.

    Isn't it a great photo! I think you're right about it being taken from the old lighthouse. I've replaced this with a larger version to see if we can see a bit more of that face you have pointed out...the shadows on the cheekbones look similar don't they?

    Dittisham waterfront. The houses on the waterfront look much as they did a hundred years ago. There are more houses higher up. This was taken from a boat halfway across the River Dart, not from the Greenway shore.
