The ship was built in 1922 and was 4086 grt. Owned by the Thompson Steam Shipping Co and sunk 1 April 1942 by U 160 in the North Atlantic. The ship was unusual, having corrugated sides but these are not apparent in the photo.

First - id of Sydney University tower by the see-thru pinnacles, then searching "Carroll's Stables" in Trove, which turned out to be O'Carroll in Hereford Street Glebe - which points the wrong way to see Sydney Uni tower, and has been uptarted out of all recognition. Then tried cross streets until I found St Peters Church on the left in Woolley St; but The Abbey spire was in the way and should be there (hence the reference to the building being moved - I never knew that). Interesting because it is one of those sleuths which fell into place relatively logically, with not too many red herrings. Evidently Bridge Street at the far end was full of highly desirable residences, many of them still there. So why did Mr Macpherson take at least three photos of this street ? ... ...
