Clare Library has a lot of info on the evictions including here: The 15th of July was Sunday-and before the weekend large contingents of troops and police were already setting up camp around Kilrush House. There were 70 Sherwood Foresters, 50 3rd Hussars, 50 Royal Berkshires (who were located at Cappagh Barrack), and 120 R.I.C. The whole arrangements were in the hands of Colonel Turner. Also present were a number of magistrates – Captain Welsh, Mr. Hodder, Mr. Roche, Mr. Shannon. The sub-sheriff was Captain Croker. The evictions took place in July, so this photo must be from afterwards if it's from August 1888.

If you look in Clare Library to the report of The Wreck of The Edmond 1850 off Kilkee. It also is indicative of the poor construction of the mud cabins as also noted in 1848. Could not get it to link for me.

Per that wikipedia article: Shortly before his arrest, Davitt had persuaded his family to emigrate to the United States. In July 1878, Davitt made a trip to visit them and raise money through a lecture tour to bring his mother and youngest sister back to Ireland (his father had since died). Upon his arrival in New York, he was welcomed by the United States-based republican organisation Clan na Gael and its leader, John Devoy. In its first such venture of the kind, the Clan organised Davitt's lecture tour, which lasted until December.

So July-December 1878, after he was in prison but before the Land War.

Taken by Pall Mall Gazette journalist Henry Norman the day after Widow MacNamara's eviction. The first sheriff, called McMahon, had turned up with a large force several days earlier but had epileptic fit and the police withdrew. The tenants saw this as divine intervention and made this effigy of him. Incidentally the title was attributed by Norman to a photo he took of Michael Davitt and two priests, full term: "the firebrands, lay and clerical".

The Bodyke evictions have been well and truly covered in other posts and on other shots. You can just see Canon Hannon in this one, he was very much the ringleader though he insisted on no violence and intervened when he felt the tenants were getting too hot under the collar. Great shot and a very interesting story!
