Taken by Pall Mall Gazette journalist Henry Norman the day after Widow MacNamara's eviction. The first sheriff, called McMahon, had turned up with a large force several days earlier but had epileptic fit and the police withdrew. The tenants saw this as divine intervention and made this effigy of him. Incidentally the title was attributed by Norman to a photo he took of Michael Davitt and two priests, full term: "the firebrands, lay and clerical".

Taken on or around June 2nd, 1887.

The Bodyke evictions have been well and truly covered in other posts and on other shots. You can just see Canon Hannon in this one, he was very much the ringleader though he insisted on no violence and intervened when he felt the tenants were getting too hot under the collar. Great shot and a very interesting story!

I think this eviction is on the Vandeleur estate, at the far side of Clare from the O'Halloran girls at Bodyke.

L_ROY_01769 is "T.Birmingham's house, Moyasta, Co.Clare with Battering Ram and soldiers outside", and appears to be the same house.

Anyone know the story behind this? I assume they are trying to resist an eviction?

Yes, that's right. This is the home of eighty year old widow, Margaret Macnamara, from Bodyke, Co. Clare, who was evicted on 2 June 1877. This might be the heavily modified cottage. The chimney looks similar...

Taken by a correspondant of the 'Pall Mall Gazette' Henry Norman who subsequently used drawings based from them in a booklet called 'Bodyke: A history of Landlordism in Ireland'.

For anyone interested, though we first posted this image back in 2010, the events it captures were covered in a 2015 episode of Tríd an Lionsa (available, as of Nov 2015, on the TG4 web-player).
