Bundaberg Base Hospital is a public hospital in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia. Bundaberg Base Hospital was opened by the Governor of Queensland in 1914. Bundaberg Hospital was the scene of a political scandal, due to the 'gross negligence of one of its surgeons, Jayant Patel. Manslaughter charges have been recommended against him, while charges of official misconduct were leveled at the hospital's Director of Medical Services, Dr. Darren Keating (the top-ranked doctor), and District Manager, Mr. Peter Leck (the CEO). On 29 June 2010, Jayant Patel was found guilty of the unlawful killing of three patients, and grievous bodily harm to a fourth.[2] On 1 July he was sentenced to seven years in jail for his offenses.[3] His lawyers made a successful appeal to the High Court of Australia where his convictions of manslaughter and grievous bodily harm were quashed and a new trial was ordered. In 1914 Bundaberg Hospital was a 16 public bed facility serving a population of around 9000 people. One hundred years later Bundaberg Hospital now has more than 200 beds and is the primary health facility for about 93,000 people. Additions to the original floor plan have included the outpatients' block, Allied Health, and Rehab ward, a new emergency department, the new family unit, and the main block to cater to ICU, renal, pediatrics, and operating theatres. "The centenary is an occasion to celebrate not only the building but the health care provided by the thousands of staff who have served the Bundaberg community. Former and current staff can look back with a lot of pride on how they have each contributed to the health and wellbeing of the people of Bundaberg." This is Lyndhurst, a Gothic Revival mansion begun in 1838 and expanded in 1864-65. Alexander Jackson Davis was the architect. Financier Jay Gould bought it as a summer home in 1880. After his death it became the home of his eldest daughter, Helen, and, on Helen's death, his younger daughter Anna took charge of the property. Anna left Lyndhurst to the National Trust for Historic Preservation on her death in 1961. Today it is a museum. Lyndhurst web site.
