Cupid? seems to be a wing sticking out on the right hand side & a quiver? Little fat babies with wings often are Cupid! You have to enlarge to original size to see.

There also appears to be a water bubbler below the cupola upon which the statue is mounted.

Hi SRNSW. It's definitely cupid but as to the date of the image and why the fountain was placed there, it might be worth contacting the Australian Garden History Society as someone there may be able to shed light on both the image and the fountain.

John Maiden, one of the turn of the century directors of the gardens, was a big believer in providing drinking water. Mainly as a temperance strategy.
