It stood at the location of the old market house and was known locally as the Big Lamp.   The fountain and upgrades to Commons were a Centennial Project (1967). This looks like construction was well underway.

  Thank you for the info about the Centennial Project! Given the format used to photograph this picture (35 mm film), we suspect this photo was taken much later -- likely in the 70s or early 80s. This likely documents repairs to the fountain, then, or maybe it was upgraded at some point?

  Mr French went back to the same high position for this one - catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000340276 . Interesting to compare the lack of trams, tall lamps, trees, etc.

  The fountain is on the 25" map at GeoHive, dated maybe 1903. That map has electric tram tracks, missing here, which are from 1898.

  Robert Craik the "Peunopile Dealer" was living in Blackrock in 1901, but isn't in the 1911 census.
