Another of the witnesses called before the Commission on Industrial Relations (Walsh Commission) for their January, 1915 hearings at New York's City Hall. Lawson was a member of the international executive committee of the United Mine Workers Union. He was a leader of the labor actions in Ludlow, Colorado at the time of the Ludlow Massacre. As he expected to be charged with crimes for his activies at Ludlow, he declined to testify in detail, but submitted a statement to the Commission. His testimony is at www.archive.org/stream/industrialrelati08unitrich#page/71... Later in 1915, he was convicted of a murder ocurring during the labor unrest, but his conviction was overturned 2 years later. Less than 100 years ago (and less than 60 miles from my house), Ludlow is a bit of our history that should be taught. Anybody traveling I-25 north of Trinidad, Colorado can visit the memorial, which is only 2 minutes or so west of the interstate. I'd recommend reading the guestbook, which has never failed to move and surprise me. I'd never seen an image of John Lawson; thanks for sharing. -- Found in a search. (?)
