Hanna furnaces of the Great Lakes Steel Corporation, Detroit, Mich. General view showing tank which stores gas from the coke oven. Square building and extension in middle ground is where coal is fed to a feeder belt and then transferred to a storage place

This is beautiful! It's so nice to see a color picture(!) of this facility, looking all clean and well-maintained in its heyday.

Let me correct peaceocake's comment. The company which was bought by a Russian firm was Rouge Steel, originally part of Ford Motor Company, and is approximately 3 miles from this facility. It's now Severstal Steel. Great Lakes Steel (pictured) was in bankruptcy when it was bought by US Steel in 2003, and now known as the "Great Lakes Works". The plant is currently in operation, with many of the same employees. This photo shows a portion of the ironmaking facility, located on Zug Island. The gas holder was torn down years ago.

My dad worked at Great Lakes Steel from sometime in the 1950's to about early 1970's. He was hurt in an explosion there on Memorial Day, 1972. I have looked everywhere on the internet for info on that explosion and cannot find anything. Does anyone remember that explosion and have any info on it? Thanks.
