Hate to think of any of them, but especially the smiley chap up the front, drowning in the Irish Sea. At the time she was under a different commander,Lohs.. usually HMSO states as to whether the captain was lost but this information is not in the Merchant Shipping Losses so I assume the captain of the Copeland survived.. What line was the Copeland ?

    The insignia on their sleeves suggests the man holding the ship's lifebouy is a Commander (a rank below the level of Captain) and the man to his left could be his second in command, the ship's Lieutenant. Perhaps it's the Lieutenant that's depicted in Ernest Binstead's drawing? Stuart.

    So interesting - we used to look out to Tuskar Rock from Rosslare as kids on hoiliday when I was about 9 years old - that would be about 1956. Does anyone remember the St. David, St, Andrew and St. patrick mail boats that sailed from Fishguard to Rosslare?
