Thank you so much for your research B-59. We'll fill in the names and add birth and death dates for these two attorneys. Because we can't pin down the date that the photo was taken, I'm not sure if we'll know if it was taken after Ledyard was charged.

It would not be unusual if there were grand jury proceedings prior to charges being brought. It's possible these pictures were taken in the hallway of a courthouse.

Plenty of other references to this picture use "Englehardt" or "Engelhardt" and I'm inclined to agree that the "a" is a mis-transcription. A Thomas Englehardt was awarded a patent for a Cigar Band in 1903. See www.google.com/patents/US747540 So far, I've been unable to determine using online sources which of the spellings with "e" is correct for the Tampa cigar factory.

swanq: Thanks for pointing out the probable transcription error and the patent information. Another picture in the National Child Labor Collection suggests that the company name is, indeed, "Englehardt"--see the caption for this photo: hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/nclc.04507. We'll adjust the description when we next update.

There is another photo of a cigar smoking youth that he took,more recognized than this one. But this shot of these 3 lads is a good example of the subject matter.
