Fox (Austen George Fox, 1849-1937, according to www.worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n85-363486), a lawyer who was candidate for District Attorney in 1897 (query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F20B1FFA385416...) The New-York tribune., June 01, 1902, Page 4 (with photo) says that he was Vice-President of the Harvard Club in 1902. The sun., January 24, 1915, FIFTH SECTION, Page 9, last column ("NOVEL INSURANCE POLICY A MEMORIAL OF R. W. GILDER") mention him together with Joseph H. Choate.

The building in the back is New York Public Library, at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Joseph H. Choate and William W. Appleton were both Trustees named in the first year of the New York Free Circulating Library. This photo may have been taken at the opening of NYPL in 1911.
