Mabel Choate (d. 1958)--daughter of Joseph Hodges Choate (1832-1917) and the former Caroline D. Sterling (1837-1929); her father was an attorney who served as US ambassador to England; her mother was one of the founders of Barnard College. Mabel Choate was active in the Republican Party, a supporter of the League of Nations, and trustee of Barnard College. Mrs. Charles Dana Gibson was the former Irene Langhorne, sister of Nancy Astor. Daughter of Chiswell Dabney Langhorne and Nancy Witcher Keene of Danville VA. It's Austen G. Fox (Austen George Fox, 1849-1937, according to www.worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n85-363486), a lawyer who was candidate for District Attorney in 1897 (query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F20B1FFA385416...) The New-York tribune., June 01, 1902, Page 4 (with photo) says that he was Vice-President of the Harvard Club in 1902. The sun., January 24, 1915, FIFTH SECTION, Page 9, last column ("NOVEL INSURANCE POLICY A MEMORIAL OF R. W. GILDER") mention him together with Joseph H. Choate.

The building in the back is New York Public Library, at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Joseph H. Choate and William W. Appleton were both Trustees named in the first year of the New York Free Circulating Library. This photo may have been taken at the opening of NYPL in 1911.
