    According to this site, Chief Meyers' actual name was John Tortes Meyers. His nickname came from the fact that he was a Native American. He was in the Cahuilla tribe, and his mother was a big part of his life. He even altered his diploma from high school, because he didn't finish. He took classes at Dartmouth with the help of a tutor, but was caught for having a false diploma.     Fred Merkle was famous for his "boner." Merkle's Boner was when he neglected to touch second base in the last game of 1908, and thus the Giants lost to the Cubs, had to play a playoff game and the Cubs won and then won the World Series....and THAT was the last time the Cubs won the World Series.
