Senior Chief Nderi of Nyeri, murdered on 23 October 1952, three days after the Emergency was proclaimed. He was "a tough and gallant old man" (The Sunday Times, 24 October 1952, p. 8).

Senior Chief Nderi accompanied by two Tribal Policemen had come across a crowd of several hundred at an oathing ceremony organised by Dedan Kimathi. When he ordered them to disperse, because by then oathing had been outlawed by the Government Authorities, they rounded on him and hacked him and his two policemen to death. He is no hero. He is a Home Guard collaborator. Serving the interests of his white masters. I could pour more vitriol but am kind.
