This pic was taken at the Canberra peg driving ceremony which took place on Thursday 20th February, 1913...the Canberra peg driving ceremony marked the commencement of the layout of the city. Note that the Canberra Inauguration Ceremony was a different occasion...it was held a few weeks later on 12th March, 1913... trove.nla.gov.au/work/231185735 - the National Archives version of this pic identifies the surveyor as P. L. Sheaffe [ie. Percy Lempriere Sheaffe]... trove.nla.gov.au/work/231041977 - Sheaffe also appears in this other National Archives pic...there's quite a bit of info on him out there, in the digitised newspapers, etc... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/15400549 - SMH, 24th February, 1913...item on the peg driving ceremony... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/31397070 - the Queanbeyan Age, 25th February, 1913...a bit more detail on the peg driving ceremony... Same occasion...King O'Malley hammering in the first survey peg... www.flickr.com/photos/state-records-nsw/51971479047/ Also same occasion www.flickr.com/photos/state-records-nsw/51972480136/ trove.nla.gov.au/work/230953530 - National Archives pic of the 2nd peg being driven in... What a shame they had to ruin such a beautiful part of the country by putting Canberra there. They should have just built some great big fortress in Melbourne from where they could have issued edicts and sent their tax collectors and police to terrorise the population. Now that democracy has been cancelled goodness knows what use they'll have for Canberra.
