This is a brilliant shot of a fine looking man and his work environment. Look at the gear in the cabin? If my memory serves me right each train carried a staff and the 'points'could only be operatied when the correct staff was inserted into those objects with the slots in them. It was a very well designed safety device in its time!

National Library of Ireland on The Commons Here's a link that explains it and with pics as well. Notice the signalman's loop for grabbing the 'token' or 'staff' as it alternatively called. It's use is a safety feature that helps prevent train collisions on single-way tracks. Stuart. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Token_(railway_signalling)
