    Dena Shapiro (Dena Evelyn Shapiro), daughter of Mrs Ida E. Shapiro of Chicago, was a graduate student in anthropology at the University of Chicago, and studied under such notables as Professor Fay-Cooper Cole and Dr Edward Sapier. Underwood Photo Archive has a rights-managed photo of the graduate-student Dena Shapiro from November 23, 1928, here. She was awarded a Master's Degree In Sociology in 1929. [1] An article entitled, The World Is Their Classroom, in the Oct. 5, 1929, issue of The Science News-Letter [jstor required] describes Dena's trips to Palestine to "study the post-war melting pot of Palestine into which Jews of all their hundred countries of exile, have been poured by the Zionist movement." An exceptional field of study for a woman in the 1920's, Miss Shapiro was described by the author of the article, Frank Thone, as a "typically American co--ed of the good looking but brainy variety." Her Thesis (M. A.) in 1929 was "Indian Tribes and Trails of the Chicago Region: A Preliminary Study of the Influence of the Indian on the Early White Settler." The collected papers of Robert Redfield, anthropologist and professor with the Department of Anthropology at the University of Chicago (c.1920-1958), include two papers by Dena Shapiro: "Notes on Australia," 1928, and "Land Tenure Systems of Malaysia," 1927. – University of Chicago Library Dena married Dr. Philip Joseph in Jerusalem in 1929. Dr. Joseph (Juris Doctor) was formerly of Montreal and London.[2] Apparently Dena and her husband settled in Palestine after she married. A daughter, Joan Joseph, was born in in Tel Aviv, in 1939. Joan became a writer of several books and taught high school French in Miami.– Gale Biography [sub req] There is a photograph of a Dr. Philip Joseph taken in 1941, in the Locating Artillery Association Newsletter (Page 10), that may be her husband. Dr. Joseph spoke before a group in Montreal, Canada, in April of 1939. Described as a "resident of Palestine", he spoke on the development of Palestine since 1922 and the cause of the Arab uprisings. In December, 1944, the Ottawa Citizen reported on an address of Dr. Philip Joseph to the Ottawa Zionist Society. The article stated that "Dr. Joseph, a lawyer who is a member of the Quebec, British and Palestine Bars, recently returned to Canada after spending 15 years in Palestine."
