Madeleine married Major Howard Elliott on June 15, 1920, in Natick, Massachusetts. She devoted much of her time to industrial and civic movements in New York and authored an authoritative report on the workings of European markets. – New York Times A portrait of the then Mrs. Madeleine Black, very similar to the portrait above, was the frontispiece of her 1911 book, Civilize The Nations.     Yeah, that theory makes more sense given the cross-out of one name for another. Hard to imagine a more likely scenario for getting both photos relabeled.

    In 1913-14, as Mrs. Black, she offered, through the Lake Mohonk (N. Y.) Conference on Arbitration, the third annual series of "Black Essay Prizes" to college women. Two women were chosen annually for prizes of $200 and $100, respectively, for essays on the subject of "International Peace." The Lake Mohonk Conference achieved the establishment of the International Court of Arbitration at the Hague, but it ended its existence in 1917, having been unable to forestall U. Evidently the Bain News Agency retrieved its 1913 portraits of her in 1920, and altered the name on the negatives to reflect her new married status.
