    Opened circa 1872. St Mathew’s Anglican Church was founded in 1869 and completed in 1874, beside Rocklea (now Sherwood) Rd. The church and adjacent cemetery (beside Oxley Creek) were dedicated in 1874 but the cemetery’s earliest headstone is from 1872. The church burnt down on 27 September 1921 but the cemetery remained open. It has pioneers’ graves, a cremation columbarium wall and a lawn cemetery. It contains the (1902) Berry and MacFarlane Monument that is one of only two Boer War memorials in Brisbane. Source: mappingbrisbanehistory.com.au/history-location/st-matthew...

    A plaque records: The first Anglican Church in Mareeba - was a wooden structure built on this site - on an honorary basis by two young brothers - Francis and Marcus Brims, aged 17 and 15 years - respectively. Completed in 1905, it was used - for worship until replaced by the - present building in 1977. A plaque records: This church - was dedicated by - The Bishop of North Queensland - The Right Reverend John Lewis SSM - Saturday 17th September - 1977. A plaque records: This church was consecrated by - The Bishop of North Queensland - The Right Reverend John Lewis SSM - Sunday 17th September - 1981.     A NEIGHBORHOOD ICON: Holy Trinity Church houses many memorials to parish members. The columbarium, completed in 1938, was the first of its kind in Queensland. Honor boards in the rear of the church name 225 men and women who served in the two world wars, most of whom hailed from the local neighborhood. The freestanding bell tower, dedicated to those who died in WWII, was originally erected within a memorial garden on the church grounds. A cross from the Church in Japan honours Holy Trinity parishioner John Duffill, one of the New Guinea Martyrs of 1942. Source: www.holytrinity.com.au/our-history
