St Luke's Anglican Church, a substantial bluestone building at the corner of Herries and Ruthven Streets, Toowoomba was constructed in stages between 1897 and 1959 to the original design of Church of England diocesan architect, John Hingston Buckeridge. The present church replaced an earlier timber slab building constructed in the mid-1850s.[1] St Luke's was designed as a traditional Gothic revival church, with a cruciform plan (nave and transepts forming a cross-shaped plan), steeply pitched roof, lancet windows, pointed arched openings, stained glass windows, and a decorated interior. As well a large bell tower with a steepled roof dominated the entrance corner of the building. Elegant sketches of the original design show a French gothic-inspired building, with round tower projections and curved apse and chapel ends. The first stage of the building included five bays of the nave, and a small polygonal baptistery projecting from the western end of the building. The place has historic significance for its associations with Cairns' first Anglican church. The first St John’s Church of England was built in 1884 on the site of the current Cairns City Library in Abbott Street. The timber church building was destroyed by a cyclone in 1920. The current St John's Church was built to replace it between 1926 and 1927. The place has local aesthetic significance as a building designed in the Romanesque style by the notable Cairns architect Richard Hill. The place has had local significance as a place of worship since 1927. A compact Romanesque style church entered via the porch at the Minnie Street, Lake Street corner with a high nave running east - west and on the exterior a cloister style verandah running east west along the Minnie Street façade with round headed arcading on short columns. Windows high up on the nave are also round-headed paired windows with vent louvers rather than glazing. At the cloister verandah, the doors are timber-framed and fully glazed. At the east end of the nave in the gable, the apex is a round (quatrefoil) window above a series of long thin round-headed windows allowing light into the tall nave space and other rooms. The body of the building is concrete with engaged pilasters which pick up the roof beam supports on the church interior. The roof cladding is Marseilles terracotta tiles. St David's Anglican Church was dedicated in 1929.[15] Rathdowney Uniting (formerly Methodist) Church, 39 Running Creek Road, 2006 Palen Creek Methodist Church opened on Saturday 10 May 1913.[16] It was relocated to 39 Running Creek Road (28.2111°S 152.8680°E) in Rathdowney in 1957. In the 1970s it was further extended with the Glenapp hall and the Barney View Lutheran Church. When the Methodist Church became part of the Uniting Church in Australia in 1977, it became the Palen Creek Uniting Church.
