Former President Theodore Roosevelt was being treated in the hospital in Chicago after being shot in Milwaukee by John Schrank (of New York City) in a botched assassination attempt, October 1912. (Roosevelt, who had been in Milwaukee to deliver a campaign sppech, was a candidate for the Presidency that year, on the Progressive Party ticket.) Jane Addams of Chicago, a friend of TR's and an organizer of the Progressive Party, visited the convalescing ex-President in the hospital. Jane Addams (September 6, 1860 – May 21, 1935) was the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In a long, complex career, she was a pioneer settlement worker and founder of Hull House in Chicago, public philosopher (the first American woman in that role), sociologist, author, and leader in woman suffrage and world peace. She was the most prominent woman of the Progressive Era and helped turn the nation to issues of concern to mothers, such as the needs of children, public health and world peace. She emphasized that women have a special responsibility to clean up their communities and make them better places to live, arguing they needed the vote to be effective. Addams became a role model for middle-class women who volunteered to uplift their communities. Jane Addams was a social reformer, pacifist and women's rights activist who was most remembered as the founder of Hull House, one of the nation's first settlement houses which offered social, educational, and cultural opportunities to the large immigrant population of Chicago.

In 1931 she, together with Nicholas Murray Butler, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She was the first American woman to receive a Nobel Prize. In 1940 this 10¢ stamp was issued in the Famous Americans Series – Scientists, to honor and commemorate her.   First Day ceremonies were held in Chicago on April 26, 1940. (Scott 878).

A 15-cent postal card in the Historic Preservation Series, marking the centennial of Hull House, was issued by the U.S. Postal Service in September, 1989. First Day ceremonies were held on September 16, 1989, at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum—part of the College of Architecture and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
