The street lighting looks pretty feeble, one lamp strung on a wire across the road. This was before the yellow Sodium lights, too, so there would have been one puddle of white light and a lot of shadow.

I owned a 1960 Ford Thames 100E van in the sixties. We use to put an old bus seat in the back for the passengers and had the two small rear windows enlarged. (you could buy a kit to do the job) In 1964 I drove the van from London to Donegal via Fishguard/Rosslare. 10 hours from London to Fishguard. Lifted on and off the ship in a net. Another 10 hours drive from Rosslare to Donegal. Not bad for a small van with three forward gears and a top speed of around 60mph.. flic.kr/p/6Ntg5H

Each year in my house we had the ceremony of the HAT! My father would begin the process of buying a new hat and it took some weeks of trying on and deciding on what style and colour to wear. He would have had a field day in this shop.

I think the ancient art of hat wearing should be brought back to the country. A good wide brimmed Fedora doubles as a personal umbrella on a wet day.

I must agree with Joefuz on that score. Hats are a much neglected accessory these days, except by the country music crowd.

Are the older girls wearing silk stockings?

blackpoolbeach I think you're right there, those look like silk stockings to me. I also note on closer scrutiny that the two older girls have similar brooches or pins in their dresses. Probably a gift for playing their part. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/69751036@N08] Kevin, as regards the mat/rug/carpet the Poole photographs have many examples of these being laid out to save the footwear and dresses of the participants. Note the young ladies lovely shoes? They were probably being save from the dirt of the lawn and footpath.
