    There is only one Corbella in the 1911 census, Luigi Corbella, 43, House Dealer, a visitor at (I believe) the Imperial Hotel. on the Mall, Waterford.

    Niall McAuley Definitely the Imperial Hotel, Niall. Wonder what an Italian born House Dealer was doing in Waterford? He was there for the census night of Sunday, 2 April 1911, and seemingly back (or still staying) at the Imperial Hotel 3 years later in May 1914. From looking at other Poole photos of Mr Corbella, he was also at the Imperial back in September 1903. Think we might be able to take it that he lived there? Or at least used it as his base when in Waterford?

Perhaps this young chap went off to the States to make his fortune, and sent a photo home?? That's not to say that he couldn't be a stay at home fashion plate, but there's just something about this photo...

    Came across the name Piper reading The Story of the Wellington Foundry Lincoln. A William Piper purchased a Showman's steam engine built 1912. Also see link for Fredrick Piper www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Mallow/Wil... .Prehaps its a publicity shot.

    The street lighting looks pretty feeble, one lamp strung on a wire across the road. This was before the yellow Sodium lights, too, so there would have been one puddle of white light and a lot of shadow.

    I owned a 1960 Ford Thames 100E van in the sixties. We use to put an old bus seat in the back for the passengers and had the two small rear windows enlarged. (you could buy a kit to do the job) In 1964 I drove the van from London to Donegal via Fishguard/Rosslare. 10 hours from London to Fishguard. Lifted on and off the ship in a net. Another 10 hours drive from Rosslare to Donegal. Not bad for a small van with three forward gears and a top speed of around 60mph.. flic.kr/p/6Ntg5H
