The Naval Advisory Board was a brainchild of the Secretary of the Navy, who asked Thomas Edison to lead a committee of the best American scientists. Each academy in each of the sciences was then asked to nominate two members to serve. Woodward was nominated through the American Mathematical Society , Craven through the American Society of Civil Engineers, and Robins through the Inventor's Guild.

Charles Neufeld was an Austrian merchant who spent twelve years as a prisoner in the Sudan, starting in 1887. He published a memoir, A Prisoner of the Khaleefa: Twelve Years' Captivity at Omduran, in 1899.
