Chinese labourers were an important element of the workforce hired by Europeanlandowners to operate the sugar cane farms. The Chinese were also renowned for their practice of market gardening in the Cairns district. Market gardeners grew an extensive assortment of fruit and vegetables which was vital to the sustenance of early settlement in the region. Besides sugar, the local Chinese population was heavily involved in the cultivation of bananas, especially around Geraldton (now Innisfail) and the Johnstone River. This was a major agricultural export industry, which the Chinese helped to expand until the mid-1900s. Regrettably, the local Chinese population was greatly reduced as a result of the post-Federation legislation designed to limit the arrival of Chinese immigrants and restrict the productive activities of those who remained in Australia. As part of the 'White Australia' policies, these legislative changes had devastated the Chinese as a distinct group in agriculture in the Cairns district by 1920. Yes!! The prize of (virtual) Christmas pudding goes to philip ward !! It is the same girl, as suggested before - maybe a daughter of the Powers... Either way, it allows us to date Hamburg! Urgent! to 1929, rather than somewhere between 1926 and 1939... :)

Rather an odd outfit for the driver. No wonder he looks out of sorts. First thing I thought when I saw the young lady was that we had seen her before in the Hamburg Urgent shot but I had been away working and had not see todays posts. She is dressed up all fancy in this one but she still looks very pretty. As regards the trees morrisoxfordV there are a variety of trees for the good reason that Powers sold seeds and trees!

This is a classic and a great image of the time that was in it. The turkeys were stopped the same way they are today with string on wings and feet as morrisoxfordV says, or else each in tied sacks. The one thing for sure is they were all fresh! Apropos your tags - I see lots of 'yokes' if you know what I mean but no yokes. Have you see something I've missed? I know I'm getting to be like a bat but I can see what matters - usually!

Swordscookie You've caught me out again! Wasn't entirely sure about yoke, but hadn't time to check (and playing Devil's Advocate with myself, decided that yoke has endless meanings in Hiberno-English). Thought yoke was the sticky outy (technical term) bit of the cart either side of the horse or donkey. Just googled and yoke is apparently more the double collar of oxen, etc. So, what are the sticky outy bits called?
