Is there a known painting that might have been a model for this?

This is a wonderful color photo. All my views of that period are of more nearly drab blacks, whites, and grays. It's fascinating to see the rich colors people actually available.

I love this one! For the richness of the colours and for the fact that he might have been a jeweller. My brother was a bench-jeweller by trade, he'd love this portrait. It does indeed look like a painting.

How on earth did they get the dog reasonably sharp? 10 pounds of magnesium powder flaring like a super-nova? Or was it stuffed? ;)

Those autochromes still look fantastic today!
The French Lumiere Brothers invented the process using a potato paste.
Albert Kahn, the French Industrialist, sent photographsrs around the world recording autochromes.

Dr. W. (William) Simon, (1843 - 1916), the creator of the photographs in this Autochrome series, was born in Eberstadt, Germany in 1843. He was a Professor of Chemistry at the Baltimore College of Physicians and Surgeons, and was an expert in autochromatic photography.

He had the distinction of having taken the first color photograph of a rainbow.(!) --NY Times
