Another school of naval reserves was in New York, the Sunday Oregonian, June 03, 1917, SECTION FIVE, Image 68, col. 1 reported that "A SCHOOL ff Naval Reserves has been established in New York where those who have enlisted In that body may study practical navigation and chartreading. Lincolndale Agricultural School for Boys was a Catholic charity run under a Brother Barnabas, opened in 1912 for selected orphans to be trained for agricultural and industrial work. On 9 March 1913, Brother Barnabas was quoted in the New York Times--at a conference on vocational schools, Brother Barnabas spoke against profit-making in such institutions, saying

"It is a step backwards when we take those who are not able to support themselves and make them support us. Surely if they are able to support others they are able to go out into the community where they can work for themselves. The minute that a boy is self-supporting his place is in society and in a good home."

Originally inhabited by the Turrbal Aboriginal people, the area known as Enoggera was named from the misspelling of the Aboriginal word, Euoggera, meaning 'place of water' or 'place of breeze'. European settlement in the Enoggera area can be traced back to 1845. However, it was not until 1871 that the first school opened on Great Northern Road (now South Pine Road) to 26 students under the guidance of teacher, Mr John Chasely Towell. By the end of 1871, the average daily attendance at the school was 43 students. The school was a social pivot for the community—concerts, dances and meetings were held in the school building and the grounds used for Sunday School picnics. The original school building is now located at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. With the district population increasing rapidly and rising school enrolments, it was deemed necessary to construct a new school building.
