Cornell University crew on the Hudson River. Men's eight oarsmen boat. The photo is dated 1912. In the date range of the collection (1910-1915), Cornell won varsity 8 in 1910, 1911, and 1912. Not clear if this is training, or preparing for the annual championship at Poughkeepsie. In the background is the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge (which is planned to reopen by Oct 2009 as a pedestrian bridge). According to Bridging the Hudson, a rail signalman would stand on the bridge and use flags to show who was winning the Intercollegiate Rowing Association's annual championship on the Hudson. The race, the Poughkeepsie Regata, has recently been revived by the Hudson River Rowing Association. Framing the photo with this bridge in the background would give interested readers a clear sense of place.

Thanks so much swanq for finding such great images of the Univ. of Wash. crew team in 1914. What's throwing me however, is the location of this shot. 2FunAdGuyz is selling a poster showing a crew team lifting their shell out of or into the water at what appears to be the same location as this Bain image. www.the2funadguyz.com/unwi19rocrpo.html They label the team, perhaps incorrectly, Univ. of Wisconsin varsity rowing team, on the Hudson River near Poughkeepsie. Not to say that the team shown isn't the 1914 Washington Huskies, but all I can nail down for sure is the bridge.
