Abandoned Car in Jamaica Bay 06/1973

Yeah, the 70s were great. Right.

Thinking about the EPA, I was thinking more along the lines of "toxic waste dumping" - is this simply abandoned in the ocean and not cleaned up (also under the EPA's jurisdiction I would imagine as it's a hazard) with none of that involved? Because it's actually kind of beautiful in a destructive, contrasting way.

The drive to Chicago from western Michigan was always punctuated by the section around Gary, Indiana. The odor from the steel mills was unavoidable and extremely unpleasant. I remember the first time our family drove to Chicago in our shiny new 1955 Chevy. The two things that stuck in the remory of an eight year old boy were Chicago's Outer Drive with traffic and skysrapers ( the tallest of which was the 42 story Prudential Building ), and the smoke filled drive through Gary. Now, the drive is much differennt with clean air, a much different Chicago skyline, and the now more visible rusting steel mills.

That car would have gone back to the earth by now. Salt water is pretty harsh on those old bugs.

Cavetroll2: It appears that you think it would have been fine to leave it for nature to cleanup. Well, nature has done a pretty good job for a few million years but, look at the nasty water and consider that the pic isn't about just one old car. There were millions dumped almost everywhere, along with a gizillion tons of other garbage. Only a sadistic masochist would want our environment to revert back to that disgusting era.
