I'm finding a Harriet Edna Oonk from Cincinnati, but not why she was newsworthy...

Harriet E. Oonk (1875-1958) of Cincinnati Ohio, was the featured photographer in the July, 1916, issue of PORTRAIT, a magazine published by Ansco. [1] "Almost every issue featured a portrait of a U.S. or Canadian photographer on the cover, an appreciative profile, including the photographer's endorsement of Ansco's Cyko paper, and one or more examples of the photographer's work. "Seventeen women (out of one hundred and forty-two photographers), were honored with cover stories".[2]  This may have been Harriet Oonk's cover portrait. Also in July, 1916, at the Thirty-Sixth Annual Convention of The Photographers' Association of America, held in Cleveland, Harriet was named as the secretary and treasurer of the Womens Federation for the coming year. [3] Harriet operated a photography studio at 1012 East McMillan Street, in Cincinnati, at least from 1908-1915. [4] Harriet likely moved to California. The 1931 South Orange County (California) City Directory lists a Harriet E. Oonk, photographer, at 2038b North Main Street, in Santa Ana, California. An older sister, Alice C. Oonk, also resided at the same address. The 1932 North Orange County (California) City Directory lists a Harriet E. Oonk, at 325 East Center Street, in Anaheim, California. [5] [6] [7] If the listing is the same person, Harriet Edna Oonk was born in Ohio, July 6, 1875, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John G.(?) Oonk (née Buchenbus). She died at the age of 83 in Orange County, California, on December 27, 1958. [8] The Smithsonian American Art Museum / National Portrait Gallery Library maintains a folder for a "Harriet Oonk, b. 1875". Further research is necessary to discover the contents of that folder.

I love the lighting in this piece, truly remarkable.

I basket weave as a hobby, I can't imagine the amount of time required to prepare the materials and weave those baskets. Now add the hours required to sell all the baskets before these childrens' day is complete. This is the same life for children and adults in third world countries when we buy that cheap basket at a discount store. Baskets cannot be made by machine - they must be made by hand!
