The street lighting looks pretty feeble, one lamp strung on a wire across the road. This was before the yellow Sodium lights, too, so there would have been one puddle of white light and a lot of shadow.

I owned a 1960 Ford Thames 100E van in the sixties. We use to put an old bus seat in the back for the passengers and had the two small rear windows enlarged. (you could buy a kit to do the job) In 1964 I drove the van from London to Donegal via Fishguard/Rosslare. 10 hours from London to Fishguard. Lifted on and off the ship in a net. Another 10 hours drive from Rosslare to Donegal. Not bad for a small van with three forward gears and a top speed of around 60mph.. flic.kr/p/6Ntg5H

"Some time in 1972" I was between high school in Pennsylvania and college in Ohio, still treasuring memories of a summer 1971 in Arizona and Denver. The West was a magical place for me back then, and these deer killers in a VW in Colorado would have seemed like magical beings.

I always hated hunting season in Rifle, Colorado. Dead deer and elk were strapped all over vehicles, and drive through town. I'm not sure why i don't see that now--maybe people are more considerate, maybe they drive down the bypass instead of through town, or maybe it's against the law. In about 1971, my brother took photographs of dead deer and posted them in an anti-hunting poster at Rifle High School. This was not appreciated by our classmates. Of course, all of our ancestors and most of our relatives were hunters. My grandparents guided hunters near Rifle. Here are a couple of photos of them. Yuck.
