The ship "Finland" was chartered by the U. S. Olympic Committee to carry the American Olympic Team to the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. It departed New York harbor on June 14, 1912 (the scene photographed above), and served as training and living quarters for the team as it crossed the Atlantic and during the games as well, when it was stationed in Stockholm harbor as a floating hotel. The sign with "American" appears to be on the pier, not on the ship. It may be for American Line, which was a unit of International Mercantile Marine along with Red Star Line. Agree that the news photo was probably due to the chartering of Finland to transport the 1912 US Olympic Team.

She sailed primarily to ports in the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Italy. She also briefly sailed on New York to San Francisco, California, service.
