    American Line's SS Philadelphia arrived in New York from Liverpool on Feb. 22, 1917, particularly newsworthy in light of heightened tensions with Germany and the break in diplomatic relations: "The American liner Philadelphia, the only passenger vessel flying the American flag to risk a trip across the Atlantic since the German submarine decree became effective, arrived at her pier at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon with 243 passengers on board."
