    The claim of sinking a submarine has since been debunked. At the time, the crew only claimed to have wrecked the periscope and conning tower. The sub in question seems to have been UB40, which survived to the end of the war when it was scuttled in the evacuation of Flanders. The US Navy does not claim a sinking.     FLAG DAY, June 14, 1912: The ship "Finland" was chartered by the U. S. Olympic Committee to carry the American Olympic Team to the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. It departed New York harbor on June 14, 1912 (the scene photographed above), and served as training and living quarters for the team as it crossed the Atlantic and during the games as well, when it was stationed in Stockholm harbor as a floating hotel.
