The British Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Rt. Hon. Iain Mcleod, MP, leaving the session of the Constitutional Conference held in the Karimjee Hall, Dar es Salaam in March 1961. On Macleod's left hand side is the Chief Minister, "Mwalimu" Julius Nyerere. On Mr Macleod's right is the Governor of Tanganyika, Sir Richard Turnbull, KCMG. Behind the Governor are Mr W B L Monson, CMG, Assistant Under-Secretary of State in the Colonial Office, and the Deputy Governor of Tanganyika, Mr John Fletcher-Cooke, CMG. Behind Mr Macleod is Chief A S Fundikira, Minister for Lands, Surveys and Water. Behind Mr Nyerere is Sir Ernest Vasey, Minister of Finance. Next to him are Mr Nsilo Swai, Minister for Commerce and Industry; then Mr Roland Brown, Legal Adviser; then Mr Oscar Kambona, Minister for Education, and Mr D N M Bryceson, Minister for Health and Labour. Of the three ladies in the second row on the left of the picture, the right hand one, looking back, is Mrs Macleod; next to her is Lady Turnbull.
