  Correction to previous post by brijvs - The Askari Monument is a tribute to the African soldiers who fought with the British during the two World Wars. The african soldiers did not fight the British. Every memorial sunday, wreaths of poppies were laid at the foot of the monument, in tribute to the sacrifice of our african soldiers for the British Army, similar to the ceremony held at the Cenotaph in London in tribute to all the soldiers of the British Army.

  Yet another correction, the Askari Monument was unveiled in 1927, so it was (at least in its original intent) a tribute to the askari who fought in WWI alone (not WWII).
