Mr (Mwalimu) Julius Nyerere addresses the Tanganyika Constitutional Conference held in the Karimjee Hall, Dar es Salaam, from 27 to 29 March 1961. Opposite him is the British Colonial Office team, with the Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Rt. Hon. Iain Macleod, MP, in the centre. On the left hand side of the square are the Governor of Tanganyika, Sir Richard Turnbull, KCMG, with Mr J S R Cole, QC, the Attorney-General, on his left hand, and the Deputy Governor, Mr John Fletcher-Cooke, CMG, on the Governor's right. On Mr Nyerere's left are (probably) Mr Nsilo Swai, Minister for Commerce and Industry, then Sir Ernest Vasey, Minister for Finance, and then Chief A S Fundikira, Minister for Lands, Surveys and Water. On Mr Nyerere's right are Mr Roland Brown, Legal Adviser, then Mr Oscar Kambona, Minister for Education, and Mr Derek Bryceson, Minister for Heath and Labour. On the right side of the square are the other TANU Ministers and some Elected Members.
