Confusing at first as this building looks very much like the Exchange on Bridge St which opened in 1851. [www.powerhousemuseum.com/collection/database/?irn=69027] However further research unearthed a sketch dated c.1870 by an unknown artist [www.printsandprintmaking.gov.au/works/29046/images/1981/] in which a building similar to that shown on p.143 above is depicted to the left (i.e., South) of the front section of the Exchange. The building shown on p.143 is on the corner of Gresham & Spring Sts (the viewpoint is taken from Bent St). According to Sands Directory 1870, this building houses the Office of Commissioner for Crown Lands; it is NOT the Exchange which fronts Bridge St. Further research will need to be done to discover the history & function of this building.

Indeed, this is not the "Exchange Building" … But it can be seen, in Gresham Street, to the left of the Exchange Building here … collection.maas.museum/object/32469 or in its later configuration at … collection.sl.nsw.gov.au/search?search=FL1651869
