The caption states the photo is from 1930. However, I believe that is incorrect. The unique aircraft in the photo appears to be a Miles M.57 Aerovan ("Miles Aerovan"). The first Aerovan did not fly until 1945. Given the fact that a Pickford's transporter is featured in the photo, I suspect this is a Miles M.57 Aerovan IV (c/n 6400), registered as G-AILF. G-AILF was leased by Pickford's Airways from October 1948 to August 20, 1950, when it was damaged beyond repair (DBR) (without any fatalities to its two crew) in Guernsey. Approximately 52 Miles Aerovans would be built, and the design would serve to be the progenitor of the far more successful Short Brothers SC.7 Skyvan and its Short 330 (SD3-30) and Short 360 (SD3-60) derivatives, many of which fly in service with a variety of civilian and military operators (including the US Air Force) to this day.

Having checked the file we have absolutely no dates for this at all. There doesn't seem to be much in the file from after 1947 but I'm happy to accept the 1948-50 suggestion unless anyone else can throw light on this.

I'm thinking this is on her return after the war. She's in dry dock, which makes it Southampton and she didn't visit there again after August 1939 until 1945. There's no degaussing cable - which was fitted quite early in the war so one must assume it has been removed. So 1946, I would guess from my ramblings.

The crash took place on 5 November 18868. Rob Roy was hauling the 5pm Mail Train from Milford when ran into the rear of the 1.37pm Cattle Train from Carmarthen causing the locomotive to over-ride two cattle wagons and resting partially on the back of the third cattle wagon. The Driver and Fireman of the mail train were not injured but three Drovers and the Guard were killed on the cattle train plus five Drovers who were injured. The cattle train had stalled on the gradient due to bad rail adhesion. Both trains were working on a Time Interval System of approx 20min intervals but owing to the continued stalling of the cattle train the mail train caught up and collided with the train. It was recommended that a Block System of Telegraph should be introduced between Awre Jct and Bullo Pill..
