P & O LINER STRATHAIRD Pleasure Cruise to Fiji Under the command of Captain J. W. Hartley the P & O liner Strathaird is due from London tomorrow and with a berth at New Farm Wharf about 5:30 p.m. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leaving London on July 12 the Strathaird had 577 passengers which is an unusually large number for this time of the year. The steamer called at Tangiers and Gibraltar and on leaving Marseilles on July 20 she had 710 passengers. The usual calls were made at the Port Side Aden Bombay, and Colombo, and the weather was enjoyed during practically the whole of the voyage to Australia. The Strathaird, which has a number of round-voyage passengers, is a pioneer of the Australian cruising liners. She will sail from New Farm Wharf at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday on a pleasure cruise to Fiji and will be a full ship leaving Brisbane. Townsville Central State School is a heritage-listed state school and former prison at 4-6 Warburton Street, North Ward, City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Francis Drummond Greville Stanley and built from 1877 to 1880 by J Rooney. It is also known as the former Townsville Gaol and Residence of the Police Inspector. In March 1869, four years after the settlement of Townsville, the first recognized school, the National School, was opened in a building that had been used as the Burdekin and Flinders Hospital on The Strand. The school began with 48 students with an average attendance for the year of 53. The school expanded in 1873 to include a girls' school for which a new building was erected in 1874 and an infant school was established in 1876 with its new building erected in 1879. In 1878 over 200 girls were attending the school. The school is located on Warburton Street at North Ward on a 3.405 ha flat site facing east at the foot of Castle Hill. The brick fence with iron balustrade to Warburton street is covered by a hedge and lined with mature shade trees. The gardens contain a variety of equipment, mature and ornamental trees, garden beds and seating areas. The site is bound to the south by a residential unit development on Gregory Street. A car park with entrance from Gregory Street, to the Dental Clinic adjacent to the west side of the quadrangle wall is fenced off from the school and sit adjacent to the hospital reserve. The Botanical Gardens form the western boundary and a day care centre and a preschool are located along the northern boundary to Kennedy Street. A rocker box (also known as a cradle) is a gold mining implement for separating alluvial placer gold from sand and gravel which was used in placer mining in the 19th century. It consists of a high-sided box, which is open on one end and on top,[1] and was placed on rockers. Rockers are usually homemade and display a variety of designs. A favorite design consists essentially of a combination washing box and screen, a canvas or carpet apron under the screen, a short sluice with two or more riffles, and rockers under the sluice. The bottom of the washing box consists of sheet metal with holes about 1/2 inch in diameter punched in it, or a l/2-inch-mesh screen can be used. Dimensions shown are satisfactory but variations are possible. The bottom of the rocker should be made of a single wide, smooth board, which will greatly facilitate cleanups.
