Photograph of postcard of wreck of the Delaware and Hudson train

Are you sure this was taken by Phelps? I know Phelps took quite a few images of this wreck, but they are all labeled differently than this image. Additionally none of his images that I have seen (of this wreck) are sepia toned.

Hi JoniMakesStuff, In early train wreck imagery, X's were used to indicate where injured people were found following the wreck. That may be what the x's indicate. Best, Effie

For pictures of other US NPCS (non-passenger carrying stock), including TPO (Travelling Post Offices) in the Clerestory Group click here...... Adjust size to suit, the detail option gives descriptions. For other relevant pictures, relating to New York State, in the Clerestory Group click here.... of which these (click here.......) are mapped with Flickr's new 2015 group mapping functionality, provided always the underlying Flickr mapping has taken place. .

Wreck of Bar Harbor express (LOC)

  • Joe said:
There were a number of wrecks involving the Bar Harbor Express over the years, but this picture probably depicts the worst of them, which took place on the morning of September 2, 1913, north of New Haven, Connecticut. Travelling at 40 miles per hour in heavy fog, the White Mountain Express plowed through two cars of the Bar Harbor Express and overturned a third coach, killing 21 and injuring 50. Here is a page with links to a series of articles about the disaster, published between September 2 and September 5, 1913.
