The elevated, cast iron (sewer?) pipes with traffic and pedestrians going underneath looks like a catastophe waiting to happen. I wonder how they finished the process?

That wouldn't be a sewer. Maybe it holds electrical wires

I think it is a gas main, probably for use during subway construction. There is an article about their use while building the Broadway subway line from January, 1916: query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9F0DE1D61739E2...
