Situated in Moreton Bay off Cleveland Point, and now named Teerk Roo Ra (Peel Island) National Park, the island has a unique history. Once a feasting and ceremonial site for the Indigenous people of the area, Peel was also used as a quarantine station in the late 1800s, and a home for inebriates in the early 1900s. From 1907 to 1959, the island functioned as a lazaret, where sufferers of Hansen’s disease (or leprosy) were separated from society and isolated under the Leprosy Act 1892. Now heritage-listed, the island’s historic remains are being preserved and the park is managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Drummer's Creek Provisional School opened on 5 April 1880, next door to George’s "Southern Cross" hotel. At that time GHL's children were Harry aged 16, Louis 13 yrs, Minnie 9 yrs, Elizabeth 7 yrs, John 5 yrs, and Maggie was almost 2 yrs. There is a recollection that at least Louis was enrolled at the school. Iris Bancroft (1903 - 2003), a highly regarded source of oral history in Eidsvold, knew Louis WEDEMEYER well. She said in a letter to Frank WEDEMEYER: "Louis went to Drummers Creek School because my aunt Mrs. George Blundell (Mrs. Dahtler’s mother) attended there with him - that would be about 1878 - 79". This could not be confirmed, since the school’s admission register relating to that time has not survived. Note that this school became a State School in January 1909 and closed on 1 Dec 1959. Florence Broadhurst The Florence Enigma Florence Maud Broadhurst was born at Mungy Station, approximately 30 km west of Mt. Perry, on 28 July 1899. Florence had a typical start to life for a girl in those days. However, she soon rose to fame, first as a singer and dancer in Asia, then as a couturier in London, and finally as a wallpaper designer in Sydney. These reinventions along with her use of different names led to her gaining a reputation as enigmatic and chameleon-like. Her life was destined to end in even more notoriety as she was brutally murdered in her own studio in 1977. The killer has never been found. Florence was larger than life character and she lived her life as she wanted, not necessarily as society saw fit. She seemed to yearn for the life of a high society miss/matron and was aggressive and tenacious in doing everything in her power to insinuate herself into elite society. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT MACKAY SIXTEEN BUSINESS PREMISES DESTROYED. (By Electric Telegraph.) (from our own correspondent.) MACKAY, February 23. A fire broke out at about 2.30 this morning and destroyed about one-half of the buildings on the east side of Sydney-street and nine shops in Victoria-street. The origin of the fire is unknown but it is supposed it started at the rear of Barnes's saddlery shop in Sydney-street. The flames spread north and south with terrible rapidity. On the north side the progress of the fire was arrested after the stationer's shop kept by Mrs. Malone, a widow, had been totally destroyed, but on the south side, the efforts of the fire brigade and public were not so successful. The buildings were nearly all old and built of wood, and before 6 o'clock no less than sixteen business places were destroyed. Tho premises destroyed were those of Mrs. Malone, stationer; Rose, oyster saloon; Claverne, tailor; Duffy, storekeeper; Grim- stone, auctioneer; McKenny, saddler, Barnes, saddler; Wills's Hotel; Blackwell, watch-maker; Davison, tobacconist; McInnes, commission agent; Queensland National Bank; Wright, solicitor; Kenna, draper (one of two shops); and two empty stores owned by W. March. Unfortunately, there was no water available until the tide was high in the river when the fire engine was supplied from that source. The Fire Brigade was most energetic but worked under great disadvantage. The damage amounted to about £13,000, £6,000 of which is covered by insurance.
