Walcheren Island, Tide In

  • Jakko Westerbeke said:
The village across the water is Westkapelle. This photo was taken from the landward side of the sand dunes that ring Walcheren island, across the flooded area created by the British bombardment of the sea defences in October 1944. It is high tide here. In the far distance in the middle of the photograph is the water tower at Domburg, sticking up above the dunes there. The windmill more to the right is the only one that remained (and remains) in Westkapelle, named “De Noorman” (“The Norseman”). The vehicle in the right foreground is an LVT (4) Buffalo, destroyed and burned out by German artillery fire.
